Larch Point

Field notes from a small cabin at the edge of a larch forest.

Late September

The larches turn first. For about two weeks the whole hillside goes from green to a soft gold, and then the needles drop all at once after the first hard frost. The path down to the lake is covered in them, and it is quieter to walk on than any carpet.

Firewood

Larch burns hot and quick and spits more than birch, so it goes in the stove only in the mornings when the cabin needs to warm up fast. The rest of the stack is birch, split in June and left to dry under the eaves.
